How to split an audio file (mp3 or wma) with windows movie maker?

You need to cut an audio file in mp3 or wma? You do not want to download and install additional programs x for this task? This tutorial is for you!

A word of caution: the file resulting from the operation will be in wma format. You can always convert the file in mp3 afterwards, but if you want an mp3 file directly as a result, you will need to use another method .

Step 1: Start Windows Movie Maker

  • If you're running Windows XP, this program must be located in "C: \ Program Files \ movie maker."
  • If you're running Windows Vista, the program will be in "C: \ Program Files \ Movie Maker".

3rd Step: Processing of the audio file

Click on your file and drag on the tape "Audio / Music" at the bottom of the screen (see image).

Perform a "Click-Drag" your file to the band "Audio / Music"

You can now see a graphical representation of your audio file on a timeline.

Now you will need to select the point or you'll cut your video. For this you must move your mouse over the line or the indicated time (see red arrow in the drawing). Click on the location of the cut. The part of the music you want to keep may be before or after this point, whatever.

  • You want to keep the part after the point: Click "Clip" -> Set the initial point of cutting. You then drag the audio track again at the beginning of the timeline.

You just have to go to "File", "Save video as ..." to get your music file, which will be in wma format.
