The death penalty in 2008
In all, 2,390 people were executed following a death sentence in 2008.
72% of these executions took place in China (1718), 14% in Iran (346), 4% in Saudi Arabia (102) and 1.5% in the United States (37).
It is notable in the U.S., this number is the lowest since 1995. The financial crisis may have played a significant role in this decline, the states being affected by the cost of a death sentence: 10 times higher than life imprisonment. The state of Texas was alone responsible for more than half (18) of killing the country.
